Cambodia: the half-way point

We reached our 9-month mark here in Cambodia, with 9 months to go. Have we done half of what we are here to do? Good question.

The weather has changed in the past few weeks.  We have exited the hot/dry season and are entering the wet season.  We have some really awesome cloud formations and thunderstorms almost every day generally in the afternoons.  The thunderstorms can cause the temperatures to drop down into the lower 80’s, which is nice for a change.

We have a weekly routine, but every week has something new in it, and some weeks are very different.  We spent a few days in Kep (កែប) a couple weeks ago, along with the other senior missionaries.  Kep a fishing community which (so far) has retained it’s Cambodian nature.  No Chinese casinos, no large scale development.  We had some good meals in restaurants at the ocean (the Holy Crab), and we stayed at the Villa Kep Resort, a nice quiet place run by a couple from Finland.  We did have a frog pop out of the open drain every day, which I caught and put outside every day. Not sure if it was the same frog every time or not…

While we were in Kep, we visited a butterfly farm, and on the way home we visited a pepper farm.  We learned about how pepper is grown and prepared, and then we had a pepper tasting for all the different kinds of pepper.  They really do taste different, unless you eat one of the hot peppers first, then everything tastes the same….

On the way back to into Phnom Penh we drove through some pretty fierce thunderstorms, which caused the streets to flood.  This video below wasn’t the worst of it. It got deep enough I was concerned about water getting into the car. A truck going downstream (the opposite direction) made a bow wave that broke over the hood of the car…. Great fun!

Navigating the street/river….

Oh, and I’ll throw this in. Pigs on their way to the market…. We are enjoying our time here in Cambodia. Language skills are not coming so fast (studying and using the language would probably help…) but we are loving the people!
