Family Visit

Family Visit!

We had family in Asia from December into January.  This included time in Thailand (Bangkok and Chiang Mai) and Cambodia (Siem Reap and Phnom Penh). Some of what we did is shown below. We enjoyed the Thai food and Cambodian cuisine, along with some good spots for western food as well in Phnom Penh (such as Cousin’s Burgers, Lone Pine, Mama’s New York Deli. )

The most unique activity of the trip was a two day adventure at a Karen tribe village outside of Chiang Mai, where we learned how to care for elephants, by well, taking take of elephants.  Washing, inspecting, feeding, verbal commands, riding, harvesting food etc.  We each had our own elephant to tend to, plus there was David, the two-year-old mischievous elephant, that just walked around doing whatever he wanted to do.  Plus a bonus:  in the evening, I shot a wild chicken with a hand-made black powder gun, and at night Nathan bagged an owl with the same gun. (yes, and owl, but the Karen tribe eats anything it can find).  This was topped off by dung beetle hunting.

Dung beetles, burrow into then eat rice husks, clearing their digestive system of dung. Then the are ready for roasting and eating!

We are about to move to Seam Reap for our last month in Cambodia.  There are some things there that we have been asked to help with, so that’s where we’ll go!  We have been to Seam Reap probably 5 times during the past year and a half, and so we are looking forward to returning and spending a month there.  Then, after our assignment is finished in Cambodia, we plan to spend some time in Vietnam on the way back to the USA.

I had so much fun seeing these photos! I especially enjoyed seeing you have the experience with the elephants; there’s nothing quite like it! I can’t wait to see you.

    Love,
    Stacy
