We’ve been in Cambodia for three months now, and besides Facebook posts, we haven’t shared much our experiences with you all yet. New Year’s resolution: add a blog post a couple of times a month at least. Thanks to friends and family for your support!
Since arriving in September, we have been involved with lots of small projects, and few larger ones during our time here so far. We are representatives of BYU Pathway Worldwide, which has just been launched here in Cambodia. It’s a great one-year program that prepares Cambodians to do online college courses through BYU. Since education really is the key to long term improvement of individuals and communities, and we are very happy to help get this off the ground here in Cambodia. There are 38 students that have signed up for the first group, with classes starting in January 2019.
Another educational program we are involved in is free weekly English classes, taught by the young missionaries at 12 different locations mostly in the Phnom Penh area, but also several other locations in Cambodia. We coordinate their efforts, and are working on improved curriculum and advertising so they can teach more students, more effectively.
Beyond this, we help out in a small congregation around 45 minutes outside Phnom Penh, attending Sunday meetings weekly and assisting with some teaching and just enjoying being with the fine people there. In 2018, church was from 8-11 am and we had high hopes that with the change to 2 hour church, we might be able to get an extra hour sleep on Sunday morning, but no such luck…church is now from 8-10 am ;-)
Here are a few pictures that represent about 1% of what we have done here. Future posts will be more organized and specific. It is very different from home, but that’s the cool thing about adventure!
