Making our way to Texas

We spent a couple night at the Kartchner Caverns Stake Park campground in Southern Arizona. No luck trying to visit the Caverns as they had limited access and entrances were booked out for the time we were there. We did have some great sunsets though…

We made our way across New Mexico (which is mainly closed to non-New Mexico residents) and down to the southern tip of Texas  It was a long, bleak drive.  Here is one photo commemorating the places we stayed along the way (Deming, NM  Bolmorhea TX, Comfort TX) The three day trip didn’t warrant any more photos….

West Texas in January: Windy, cold, vast and deserted

San Benito, Texas

Things warmed up down at the tip of Texas. We were among palm trees again. Man is that place flat. We could see for miles all around when driving over an overpass. There were very few folks out on South Padre Island at this time of year, and under Covid conditions.

South Padre Island: Beach, or really long mud flat?

Port Aransas, Texas

Another costal town, but a bit chilly while we were there. We drove on the beach (and then had a thorough car wash afterwards). When it came time to leave, we had to pack up in the pouring rain.

Austin, and San Antonio Texas

Both cities have beautiful downtown river walks.  We ate some good Thai food, good authentic Texas BBQ, and a great Mexican food.  The Bullock State History Museum had an awesome display of a resurrected hull of a 17th century Spanish ship that had sunk in shallow water, along with all the artifacts found.  We stayed in McKinney Falls State park on the outskirts of Austin. It felt remote, even though it was only a few minutes from downtown. State parks have been really nice places to stay. They are generally in beautiful locations, with plenty of spacing between campsites.

Next up:  Livingston Texas near Houston!

Dave and Susie, Thanks for letting us travel with you. It’s great to see where you are and get to sleep in our own beds every night.

    1. We sleep in our own bed every night too, we just park it in a different place every few days…
